How to set up your mesh system, range extender, or spare router so Happinetz parental controls work perfectly across every room in your home.
The Problem — Why Parental Controls Stop Working With Mesh WiFi
Many homes today use mesh WiFi systems, range extenders, or a second router to get better coverage in every room. This is great for internet speed — but it can silently break your Happinetz parental controls without you even knowing.
Here is what happens:
- Your child's phone connects to the mesh router or extender
- The mesh router creates its own network — with its own DNS settings
- DNS requests from your child's device go to the mesh router first
- Happinetz never sees the request — so it cannot filter anything
- Your child can access blocked websites and apps freely
⚠️ Important: This is a very common issue. If you have added a mesh system or second router at home and noticed parental controls are not working correctly — this is almost certainly the reason.
Why This Happens — Router Mode vs Access Point Mode
Every router and mesh system can run in different modes. Most devices ship in Router Mode by default — which is wrong for use with Happinetz.
| Mode | What It Does | DHCP/DNS | Works with Happinetz? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Router Mode | Creates own network | Own DHCP & DNS | ❌ No — hides devices |
| Access Point Mode | Extends network only | Uses Happinetz | ✅ Yes — recommended |
| Bridge Mode | Same as AP Mode | Uses Happinetz | ✅ Yes |
| Repeater / Extender Mode | Wirelessly extends signal | Mixed | ⚠️ Not recommended |
When a device runs in Router Mode, it becomes a separate network inside your home. Happinetz sits on the outside of that network and cannot see or control individual devices behind it.
✅ Tip: Switching to Access Point Mode is the only configuration that allows Happinetz to see every device individually and apply the correct Kid, Teen, or Parent profile to each one.
Using Your Old or Spare Router as a Range Extender
If you have a spare router at home — from any brand — you do not need to buy a new extender. You can convert it into an Access Point for free. This is often the best and most reliable solution.
📌 Note: For all routers used as Access Points: always connect using a LAN-to-LAN cable between the Happinetz box and the spare router. Do NOT use the WAN port on the spare router.
TP-Link Archer Router (C6, AX55, AX73 and other Archer models)
1. Connect a LAN cable from any Happinetz LAN port to a LAN port (not WAN) on the Archer router
2. Open a browser and go to http://tplinkwifi.net
3. Login with your admin credentials
4. Go to Advanced → Operation Mode (older models: Advanced → System Tools → System Parameters)
5. Select Access Point Mode
6. Click Save — the router will restart and is now an Access Point
✅ Tip: All devices connecting to this Archer router will now be visible to Happinetz individually.
D-Link Router (DIR Series)
1. Connect a LAN cable from Happinetz LAN port to a LAN port on the D-Link router

Mesh WiFi Systems
Mesh systems are popular for whole-home coverage. Most support AP Mode — here is how to enable it on the most common brands.
TP-Link Deco (M4, M5, M9, XE75 and all Deco models)
1. Open the Deco app on your phone
2. Tap the menu icon (☰) in the top right
3. Tap More → Advanced
4. Tap Operation Mode
5. Select Access Point Mode
6. Tap Save — Deco will restart in AP Mode
✅ Tip: TP-Link Deco in AP Mode works seamlessly with Happinetz. This is the recommended mesh system for Happinetz users.
Netgear Orbi (RBK Series)
1. Open a browser and go to http://orbilogin.com
2. Login with admin credentials
3. Go to Advanced → Advanced Setup → Router / AP Mode
4. Select AP Mode
5. Click Apply — Orbi will restart
Eero (Amazon Eero and Eero Pro)
1. Open the Eero app on your phone
2. Tap Settings → Network Settings → DHCP & DNS
3. Change the mode to Bridge Mode
4. Confirm — Eero will restart
📌 Note: Eero calls it Bridge Mode — this is exactly the same as Access Point Mode and works correctly with Happinetz.
Linksys Velop (MX Series)
1. Open the Linksys app on your phone
2. Tap Network Administration → Bridge Mode
3. Enable Bridge Mode
4. The app will restart the system
Google Nest WiFi / Google WiFi
Google Nest WiFi does not have a standard AP Mode option. There are two alternatives:
Option A — Disable DHCP (workaround):
1. Open the Google Home app
2. Tap WiFi → Settings
3. Turn off DHCP
4. Connect Google Nest to Happinetz via LAN cable
⚠️ Important: With this workaround, Happinetz controls DNS but individual device profiles may not work reliably. Option B below is strongly recommended.
Option B — Replace with TP-Link Deco (recommended):
For the best experience, replace Google Nest with TP-Link Deco set to Access Point Mode. TP-Link Deco is fully compatible with Happinetz and available at most electronics stores.
Dedicated Range Extenders
TP-Link Range Extenders (RE305, RE500, RE700 and all RE Series)
1. Open a browser and go to http://tplinkrepeater.net
2. Login with your admin password
3. Go to Settings → Operation Mode
4. Select Access Point Mode
5. Click Save — device will restart
Netgear Range Extenders (EX Series)
1. Open a browser and go to http://mywifiext.net
2. Login with admin credentials
3. Go to Settings → Do More → Access Point Mode
4. Click Enable Access Point Mode
5. Click Save — device will restart
D-Link Range Extenders (DAP Series)
1. Open a browser and go to http://192.168.0.1
2. Login with admin credentials
3. Go to Setup → Wireless Setup → Mode
4. Select Access Point Mode
5. Click Save Settings — device will restart
After Switching to AP Mode — Complete These Steps
Once your device is in AP Mode, complete the Happinetz setup:
1. Connect the mesh/extender/router to any LAN port on your Happinetz box using an ethernet cable
2. Open the Happinetz app on your phone
3. Go to home and press + button → Add Device
4. Add each device in your home individually (phone, laptop, tablet, TV etc)
5. Assign the correct profile to each device — Kid, Teen, or Parent
6. Happinetz now protects every device across your entire home
✅ Tip: You do not need to add the mesh router or extender itself as a device in Happinetz. In AP Mode it is invisible — only the devices connected to it need to be added.
One More Step — Disable MAC Randomization on Each Device
Modern smartphones automatically change their WiFi identity (called a MAC address) to protect privacy. While this is useful in public places, it causes problems with Happinetz because the device appears as a new unknown device each time the MAC changes.
Disable MAC randomization on every device before you add to Happinetz network:
In general Mac randomization is default ON for Phones only and default off for TV, Laptops etc.
iPhone / iPad:
1. Go to Settings → WiFi
2. Tap the (i) icon next to your Happinetz network
3. Turn off Private WiFi Address
Android (Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi and others):
1. Go to Settings → WiFi
2. Tap and hold your Happinetz network → Manage network settings
3. Tap MAC address type
4. Select Use device MAC
⚠️ Important: If you skip this step, your child's device may appear as an unknown device after a few days and parental controls will not apply correctly.
